Not to toot his own horn -- err, trumpet -- but district music coordinator and director of bands at Bergenfield High School Brian Timmons is pleased with his department and the work they do. "Musical achievements are good. Kids who go through this program are destined for greatness," he says.

This lifelong Bergenfield resident couldn't imagine life in another town, saying, "Bergenfield shaped who I became." Born and raised in this Bergen town, Timmons started his musical career in the third grade when he picked up the trumpet. After graduating Bergenfield High School, he went on to William Paterson University and then Hofstra to get his master's degree in conducting. He soon made his way back to Bergenfield High School where he assisted under his former teacher until he took his current position.

Music plays a major role not only in his career, but in his social life as well. He and his wife met in the high school band room right outside what is now his current office.

Timmons has many responsibilities, many of which don't end with the final bell. "The coolest part about my job is that it is so many jobs in one," says Timmons. He helps the students rehearse in band class, conducts performances, teaches musical concepts and programming, attends various administrative meetings, and works with the Summer Music Program, a four-week course for students in the fourth through 12th grades.

Bergenfield High School's marching band has an incredible list of accomplishments that includes performing in the New Jersey State Honor Band Gala and playing in the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade 20 times. "We are ready for the 21st time," beams Timmons.

Timmons realizes high school is just the beginning for these talented young musicians. "We don't just teach music, we teach kids. Music is just a vehicle. Life lessons outweigh musical theory," he says. "After the applause is over at the last concert, the real encore is the rest of their life. These are remarkable kids."
