“Petal’s”, “From the Flowers of Our Youth”
Remembrances of our Bergenfield Friends
By Richie Conti , Class of 1966

One of the hardest things about growing older is the realization that our lives are getting shorter. I don’t remember when I started looking at the obituary columns in the Record, but every once in a while, a name would grab my attention. Sometimes I would be able to visualize a face and a memory with the name, and sometimes, more often than not, I couldn’t. However, the names I couldn’t put a face to would still strike a cord within. I knew that somehow, some way this person had been part of my “Bergenfield” life.
Since moving out to Arizona in 2002, I read the obituary from the Record on-line every single day. I’m not sure why I do it, but I do. Maybe it’s because when I see a familiar name, I take a moment to reflect on that person as a way of showing respect.
Now, I assist Joe with this website, by verifying the memorials that are sent in and I get to read, first hand, the moving thoughts people express about the friend that is no longer with us. Lately, it seems like more and more announcements of people’s passing have poured into the message center, people from all different classes and people of all different ages. The saddest part in particular is that the vast majority of them have passed on way to young. If you close your eyes, you can still see them with us as we were, running around doing all the crazy things we read about on the message board. The bouquet of our lives that seem as if it was in full bloom just yesterday is starting to lose its petal’s. This site and its notices enable us to salute our friends, our loved ones, our teachers. This is a very good thing, this reminiscing that we do, because it helps the rest of the petal’s to stay young for a little while longer.

To steal a phrase from a certain movie title,
“We were Bergenfield, and “We were Young”.
